Vermont On-Farm Oilseed Enterprises: Production Capacity
Note: The oilseed production component of the VBI started in 2005 with two farms growing oilseeds. Table 1 illustrates the growth of oilseed production in Vermont. In addition to an increase in the number of farms contributing production data, the key variables affecting average yields are pest, weather, and disease pressures.

with farm-scale biodiesel production. With guidance from University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and grant funding from Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund’s Vermont Bioenergy Initiative, Rainville began planting sunflowers on a portion of his 214 acres and installing biodiesel processing equipment. most promising enterprise at the farm scale appears to be oil and meal production. This study prompts additional questions regarding the extent to which Vermont crop production should shift to include oilseeds for biodiesel production, the net energy return to the farm, and lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from on-farm production.
