Improvement of palm oil through breeding
The oil palm Elaeis guineensis is the highest oil-yielding crop and has the potential to become the major supplier of both edible oil and renewable industrial feedstock. The oil yield from wild groves is presently less than 0.5 t/ha/y. However, through breeding and selection, the oil yield of commercial plantations could reach as much as 8 t/ha/y.

Genetic mapping is like identifying the DNA of oil palm plants. With biotechnology, we are able to detect positive traits related to oil palm productivity and stability of a plant, and select the elite plants which have the desired characteristics (such as high oil content, high nutrient content and disease-resistant) for cross-breeding.

Biotechnology of oil palm: strategies towards manipulation
A large number of transformation constructs for various targeted products were successfully produced using the isolated oil palm genes and promoters. Finally transformation of these constructs into oil palm embryogenic calli was carried out while the regeneration of transgenic oil palm harboring the useful genes is in progress.
heralded a new chapter in the history of oil palm genetic improvement. The oil palm can take its place in the world as another major crop that has had its whole genome map sequenced (at least in its draft form). What is the consequence of this revelation of the oil palm genome? Keywords: genomics, breeding application, oil palm.
Assessment of Genetic Diversity of NIFOR Oil Palm Main
The Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) oil palm Main Breeding Programme (MBP) is a modifi-cation of the Reciprocal Recurrent Selection (RRS) proposed by Comstock . et al. One of the most important features of this scheme of selection is the improvement of the hybrid by a gradual assemblage of favourable al-
Summary. Yield of Deli dura oil palms after four generations of selection was 60% greater than that of the unselected base population. Total above-ground dry matter production was increased by selection, apparently through better utilisation of solar radiation.
